In a major development with far reaching ramifications in the political and
academic realms in the state, the Higher Education Department of Kerala Government has invited applications for the post of Vice-Chancellor in Calicut University.
It is for the first time that such an advertisement seeking nominations for the post of Vice Chancellor in any University in the state is made, ending an era of political appointments to the post of Vice Chancellor in the Universities in the state.
More significantly, the UGC eligibility norms have been strictly made mandatory in the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor.
The move comes in the wake of the end of the tenure of Dr. M Abdul Salam on 11 August 2015, whose term was marred by scams and controversies of various hues, giving a constant head ache to the IUML, the ruling constituent holding the education portfolio, which roped in him for the coveted academic post.
The notification for appointment published on the University website specifically states that the candidate “shall be a distinguished academician with a minimum 10 years’ experience as professor in a university system or in an equivalent position in a reputed research and/or academic administrative organisation. . Persons, who are more than 60 years of age, as on October 29, 2015, are not eligible.”
It also states full, detailed and correct bio-data, duly signed by the nominated candidates along with the list of publications, awards and details of experience and any other relevant material shall be forwarded along with the nomination to Finny Zachariah , Additional Secretary, Higher Education Department ,Room No. 137, North Block,Government Secretariat, Thiruvananthapuram -Kerala, 695001 on or before 3rd October 2015 (Saturday).
The move assumes significance as it would rule out the prospects of many nominees being considered by the IUML for the post, ending an era of political appointments to the post of Vice Chancellor in the Universities in the state.
The notification was made as per the decision of the first meeting of the three-member search committee appointed by Governor Justice P Sathasivam on September 15. The search committee will consider nominations for the post at its next meeting on October 12.
The details of notification are available in the web site of the University of Calicut, says a press released by the university.
