Meanwhile, the crucial meeting of the search committee to propose the candidates for the selection of the next Vice Chancellor of Calicut University , scheduled for Tuesday could not be held owing to the inconvenience of UGC’s search committee member and Jawarlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar due to the students’ stir at JNU.
The term of the search committee ended on November 15. It is learned that the Government has requested the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, to extend the tenure of the search committee.
The post of Calicut University Vice Chancellor is highly significant for the the ruling LDF Government, as it is the biggest in the state and in the Muslim League dominated district of Malappuram. Anxious moments are there also in the offing for the CPI (M) and the state Government as to whether the Governor and UGC representative in the search committee, Jagadesh Kumar, would whole heartedly support the Government nominee to the VC post.
Arif Mohammed Khan had recently gone against the Government’s wishes while nominating the
Vice Chancellor for the Kerala University of Health and Allied Sciences (KUHAS)
Governor He rejected the recommendation of the government while appointing the new vice chancellor (VC) of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). Instead of the suggested names, Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, member of KUHAS governing council and dean of medicine, was appointed as the new vice chancellor of KUHAS
The candidates whose names are doing rounds for the VC post include KM Seethi (Professor, School of International Relations and Politics, MY University), K. Girish Kumar (Professor, CUSAT), CA Jayaprakash (Principal Scientist, Central Tuber Crops Research Institute) and CT Aravindakshan (Pro Vice Chancellor of MG University)
The academic and political sectors are anxiously waiting for the turn of events in the appointment of Vice Chancellor for Calicut University and ultimate choice of the person for the job. A non political vibrant academician with vision and calibre will be the best choice and the Governor will also consider in that way, everyone expects.
