The two top most  statutory officers of the University of Calicut, Dr. K.  Mohammed Basheer and Dr. P. Mohan, incumbent Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor respectively will be demitting their offices on November 20. Dr. Mohammed Basheer will complete his four year term on that day while Dr. Mohan who has still 4 more months to complete his term of office of four year  from his original appointment date, has to step down, as his term was coterminous with that of the Vice Chancellor, as per the new UGC regulations, making it mandatory.
It is the first time in the history of the Calicut University that both the incumbent Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor have to relinquish their offices in the University on the same day.
A series of farewell meetings are now under way on the University campus to bid adieu to the outgoing  incumbents under the auspices of various organizations, cultural forums, Chairs and departments in the University campus
Notable among them was the farewell meet organized today by the  Chair for Gandhian Studies and Research in
a glittering manner to Dr. Mohammed Basheer and Dr. Mohan today at the Seminar hall.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor Dr Mohammed Basheer said that the University could achieve a lot academically and in all other spheres during their term. He attributed them to the extensive support of the Syndicate, teachers, students and the non teaching staff of the University.

Speakers at the meeting said that this is indeed a very emotional and difficult moment to bid farewell to the present Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor as under their able guidance the University has reached new heights of academic progress and infrastructural development.

The University was having a peaceful and happy time during their term with all good rapport with all stake holders. The incidents of strike and turbulence were few unlike in the past, they said
These two persons, over and above their highest positions, were functioning with a caring and loving approach to all, especially to the students and staff, adhering to the virtuous  principles of fairness, transparency and justice, the speakers at the farewell meet pointed out.
Dr. Arsu, eminent writer and social activist,  presided over the function. Premarajan welcomed the gathering. MV Zakaria, Sugandhi,  Velayudhan , among others, spoke.  Sadanandan proposed a vote of thanks

Meanwhile, the crucial meeting of the search committee to propose the candidates for the selection of the next Vice Chancellor of Calicut University , scheduled for Tuesday could not be held owing to the inconvenience of UGC’s search committee member and Jawarlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar due to the students’ stir at JNU.
The term of the search committee ended on November 15. It is learned that the Government has requested the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, to extend the tenure of the search committee.
The post of Calicut University Vice Chancellor is highly significant for the the ruling LDF Government, as it is the biggest in the state and in the Muslim League dominated district of Malappuram. Anxious moments are there  also in the offing for the CPI (M) and the state Government as to whether the Governor and UGC representative in the search committee,  Jagadesh Kumar, would whole heartedly support the Government nominee to the VC post.
Arif Mohammed Khan had recently gone against the Government’s wishes while nominating the
Vice Chancellor for the Kerala University of  Health and Allied Sciences (KUHAS)
Governor He rejected the recommendation of the government while appointing the new vice chancellor (VC) of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). Instead of the suggested names, Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, member of KUHAS governing council and dean of medicine, was appointed as the new vice chancellor of KUHAS
The candidates whose names are doing rounds for the VC post include KM Seethi (Professor, School of International Relations and Politics, MY University), K. Girish Kumar (Professor, CUSAT),  CA Jayaprakash (Principal Scientist, Central Tuber Crops Research Institute) and CT Aravindakshan (Pro Vice Chancellor of MG University)
The academic and political sectors are anxiously waiting for the turn of events in the appointment of Vice Chancellor for Calicut University and ultimate choice of the person for the job. A non political  vibrant academician with vision and calibre will be the best choice and the Governor will also consider in that way, everyone expects.
