Century in Commentary

VA Jose   is all set to present his 100 th radio commentary for All India Radio in the ongoing 66th National Senior Volleyball championship in Calicut. While speaking to CNM at Calicut Trade Centre Indoor Stadium, Swapnanagari in Kozhikode, he shares his passion for sports commentary.

VA Jose, hailing from Kotancheri in Kozhikode began his career as a football commentator in 1990.It was during the Nagji Football Tournament, All India Radio picked him after conducting a voice test.He recollects, there were 36 aspirants for the opportunity. He was the only person selected in the test.

Since then,he has been familiar voice  of All India Radio live commentaries of all major sports events. His narration keeps volley ball and football fans excited as they watch the games on live gallery.

He was a football referee too. So,he got a good depth in the rules and regulations of the play. So,his running commentaries took him to excellent level. Later,he worked as a volley ball referee too.

Jose covered two Nehru Trophy matches.

He worked for many big events like Federation Cup,GV Raja,Santhosh Trophy matches.

He also covered India-Oman match held in Kochi in 1997.

Jose excelled in sports analysis also. Akashavani,Kozhikode’s Kalikkalam is such a sports promotional program, popular  among sports fans, especially for soccer crazy people in Kozhikode and Malappuram district.

Jose opens up the secret behind the success of being a good commentator.

“A good commentator has quick flow of spoken words. And,he is the person with good statistics.

I had a passion towards sports during my school days.

I was a junior champion in Athletics. Later, I turned to games like football and volley ball.I worked as volley ball referee for 20 years.”

A commentator is a person creates visual images of the game, the venue etc.He creates a stadium,a playground and a spirited game in the mind of listeners.

Jose goes back to 1991 Nehru Trophy event, held in Thiruvananthapuram in which Romania took on Hungary.

It was hard to spot players because their jersey was similar. The style and height of players in both sides also were identical. However,he managed the game, somehow.

“Volley has changed lot.The news scoring scheme is entirely different from the old one.

If you ask him which volley is more exciting, the veteran in this field need not think twice:

“Old volley ball was more exciting than today’s”

Before 1999, points could be scored only when a team had the serve (side-out scoring) and all sets went up to only 15 points. The Federation of International Volley Ball changed the rules in 1999 (with the changes being compulsory in 2000) to use the current scoring system (formerly known as rally point system), primarily to make the length of the match more predictable and to make the game more spectator- and television-friendly.
