Safa Febin, a Plus Two student of Government Higher Secondary School at Karuvarakkundu near Nilambur in Malappuram district may not have expected to rise to stardom by an unexpected turn of event that occurred in her life at an event held in her school on Thursday.
The whole show and proud moment for the naive girl from a rural background came when Rahul Gandhi, the MP from Wayanad, who was at her School to inaugurate its new science lab asked the gathering of students, teachers and public:
“I am going to speak in English, but I would like someone to translate,” he said. “Is there a student who would like to translate what I am saying? Is there somebody?” he asked, smiling, as he scanned the young audience.
Safa Febin (17), who had never translated a speech before, sitting in the audience, accepted Gandhi’s invite, walking up to the dais to a deafening cheer from the around 4,000 students.
Rahul went across the stage to shake hands with her and handed over her the microphone.
“What’s your name?” he asked, before turning towards the audience and speaking into the microphone: “Thank you, Safa, for helping me translate.” She covered her face with one hand, the other holding the mic, as another cheer followed.
The 16-year-old girl translated the Congress leader’s speech without any hiccups and made the school proud and her friends and teachers wonder.
Her conventional style of presenting the transaction of the speech of the national leader, embedded with local slang of Malappuram, evoked much interest and enthusiasm among the listeners, notably Rahul himself.
Her friends cheered for her each time she used the correct translation of Rahul’s words.
After the speech, Gandhi also appreciated Safa’s effort and presented a chocolate to her. The video of translation of Safa has also gone viral on social media.
Deeply impressed by the translation and high spirits of the girl, Rahul Gandhi himself has posted the video on his Facebook page.
Safa Febin, a talented young student at G.H.S.S lationKaruvarakkundu volunteered to translate my speech this morning. Her confidence and ‘can do spirit’ won our hearts.
said Rahul in his FB post
“I like Rahul Gandhi, and when I got the chance to share the stage with him, I happily used the opportunity. I was a bit nervous though. But I became more happy when Rahul Gandhi appreciated my translation.
The Karuvarakkund government school falls under the Wayanad constituency represented by Rahul Gandhi.
On the stage, AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal and Congress leader AP Anilkumar were seen full of appreciative smiles while Safa was translating the speech.
Earlier this year, Jyothi Vijayakumar, a Congress activist, had attracted widespread praise for translating the then Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s speech into Malayalam during the Lok Sabha election campaign in Kerala. Her piercing voice and ‘going out of the way’ from the hitherto boring word-to-word translation had won her, especially when P J Kurien bungled his transaction on a previous occasion, cutting a sorry figure.
Mr. Gandhi, at the function, reminded the students about the importance of science and called upon them to have a scientific mind and creative approach. He also urged them to free their minds of hatred and spite.
