Court orders probe on the irregularities in the PhD awarded to Kannur University VC

The Thalasserry Vigilance Court has ordered a fresh probe into the complaint that the Kannur University Vice Chancellor Abdul Khader Mangad obtained his Ph D in English literature using unfair means and forged documents. The complaint filed by Kannur University Junior Librarian P. Surendran, based on the RTI documents accessed by him, accuses Khader Mangad of submitting Ph D thesis well before the stipulated time period and also signed research attendance register and college register simultaneously on the same days.

According to the complaint, Dr. Khader Mangad had signed the attendance register against the dates such as February 29,2003, September 31, 2003 and November 31, 2004, which were non existent days as per the calender. He had also marked duty leave in his college attendance register, Nehru Arts and Science College, Kanhangad, where he was working earlier and signed in the register at his research centre, Thalasserry Government Brennen College on same days many a time.

Dr. Khader Mangad did his Ph D on the subject “Patterns of Indians seen in Madhavikutty’s Works” under the guideship of Dr. K.V. Surendranath of Government Brennen College, Thalasserry. He registered for the PhD in August, 2002 while he was working as an Associate Professor at Kanhangad Nehru College and submitted the thesis in April 2006, within a span of four years. As per the prevailing norms of Kannur University during that period, the part time research scholars can submit the thesis only after completing four years.

During the previous UDF regime, there were wide agitations in Kannur University over the irregularities found in the award of Ph D to Dr.Mangad by the left Unions in Kannur University. Mr. Sudheer Chandran, Kannur University Employees Union President, who spearheaded the move against Mangad was suspended and even banned from entering the University campus. There was lull in the demand for a fresh probe for sometime.Prior to becoming Vice Chancellor, Dr. Khader Mangad was Kasaragode DCC Secretary and had unsuccessfully contested the Kasaragode Lok Sabha constituency.

Earlier, in a quick verification report, the vigilance had exonerated the Vice Chancellor of the charges citing lack of prima facie evidences against him. On the fresh petition now filed, the court found that the vigilance report was wrong after the petitioner provided his arguments. The court will consider the case again on December 1.

Now with the change of guards in state government, the move against Dr.Mangad, who was a known congress leader roped in for the post of Vice chancellor by the previous UDF ministry is gaining momentum and the fresh case has indeed landed him in trouble.
