Dr. K. Muhammad Basheer new VC of Calicut University

Dr K. Muhammad Basheer has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Calicut University. Ending suspense ripe in the air for the last two days over the controversy on the unanimous recommendation of the Search Committee for the appointment of Muhammed Basheer as VC over many other outstanding academicians, Governor Justice P. Sathasivam, who is also the Chancellor of the University ratified the appointment of Dr K. Muhammad Basheer today accepting the recommendation of the Search Committee in his favour.

The name of Basheer alone was forwarded by the three-member search committee comprising university senate representative Abid Husain Thangal, UGC representative S A Bari and Chief Secretary Jiji Thompson, who is also the Convener, to the Chancellor on Tuesday.

The Governor had sought clarification from the Chief Secretary on the qualifications of Dr.Basheer, as two other academicians in the race were found more qualified than him.

Considering his experience as a College teacher and Principal for more than 2 decades and as Registrar of Kerala University for 3 years, Basheer was being recommended for the post. He is a former Principal of Sullamussalam Science & Arts College in Areacode, Malappuram.

The Chief Secretary was summoned by the Governor to get clarifications on the qualifications of Basheer.

It is also learnt that Dr. V. Prasanna Kumar, Director of the Geo Informatic Centre at Kerala University tops the list of shortlisted applicants with his brilliant academic qualifications and 22 years of teaching experience. Dr. Ramachadran of CUSAT was also in a prominent place in the list.

Basheer hails from Puthur Pallikkal near Tenjhippalam, where the university campus is situated. He is the nephew of V.P. Abdul Hameed , an IUML leader, who was considered for the post of Vice-Chancellor earlier in 2011by the Muslim League, but the move had to be abandoned in the face of stiff opposition from all corners as he had no teaching experience at the college or University level prescribed for the VC’s post. Dr. Abdul Salam was roped in as VC then by the League. Abdul Hameed is currently a Syndicate member of the Calicut University.

Dr Muhammad Basheer will replace Dr M Abdul Salam, who completed his term on August11. It is expected that Dr. Basheer will assume office on November 21.
