Internationally acclaimed chemist and ‘green chemistry’ expert Dr.P.Raveendran has been recommended by the state government for the post of Pro Vice Chancellor of Calicut Univrsity. Governor P. Sathasivam, who is also the Chancellor of the University and the appointing authority will give final clearance for his appointment on Monday. An experimental physical chemist with broad areas of research work in “green chemistry” and molecular sociology, Dr. Raveendran is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Calicut.
Design of low cost, environmentally benign materials with high solubility in liquid and supercritical CO2, Solvation phenomena in supercritical CO2 and Green Synthesis of metal and semiconductor nanoparticles are among his current research interests.
A Ph.D holder from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Dr. Raveendran has been teaching for 17 years. Author of nearly three dozen high standard research publications on the subject which is used as authentic reference books for studies and research in Chemistry in many Universities, Dr. Raveendran has made remarkable contributions in green chemistry and nanotechnology. He is also a visiting scientist at the University of Gottingen, the University of Potsdam, and the University of Aveiro. He has also held positions as Foreign Researcher of the Japan Science & Technology Corporation (JST) under the Core Research in Evolution Science & Technology (CREST) program, JSPS Fellow, and Staff (May 2003-Dec 2005), Supercritical Fluid Research Center, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Sendai, Japan.
Dr. Raveendran is from Pulamanthole in Malappuram district. He had a very humble beginning in his life and career. Born to a school teacher father, he had his early education in a local Government school and graduate studies later at Government SNGS college at Pattambi. He did his M. Sc. from University of Calicut in 1989 and Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1998.
A highly compassionate and committed person to his students and society, Dr. Raveendran has taken initiatives to start a charitable organisation namely FERI (Foundation for Education, Research and Innovation) aimed at providing educational guidance and financial aid to the students. He is the President of the Calicut University Teachers Association (CUTA). During the regime of the last CPI (M) Syndicate, there were attempts to sack Raveendran and some other teachers for alleged political reasons.
The Syndicate took a motivated stand that his foreign qualifications experience could not be reckoned for his appointment as reason for his ouster. Finally, after relentless strikes and legal battles, the Governor and the High Court ratified their appointment ending an era of crucification of the teachers for years by the CPM syndicate.
