How to regain Calicut’s past glory in trade?

How to re-invent Kozhikode in its industry driven past glory was the most discussed topic in the Rising Kerala preparatory meeting organized by the Small Scale Industries Association in Calicut.

Major industrialists, entrepreneurs and people’s representatives in the district took part in the face to face. Indian Institute of Management (IIM-Kozhikode) Assistant Prof. Saji Gopinath’s presentation suggested the government, creating an investor-friendly environment and good working condition. “We can use our tradition and entrepreneurial spirit to re-build the district.

NRI Investment

The investment of NRI’s and the untapped resources can be mobilised to make Kozhikode as an industrial and trade hub. For this, a collective effort is necessary, he points out. “There are some subtle scopes as well as challenges to become a top destination in industries as we had once. There are three type possibilities for an industrial growth in the district.”

“New and young entrepreneurs, NRK investment, and expansion of existing industries are the three opportunities in Kozhikode. Industrial zone is very much needed to clear all environmental and technical hurdles stand in the industrial way.”

He also suggested a convention centre in Kozhikode, which is essential for conducting trade fairs, in a cost-effective manner. Creation of industrial zones at government run business parks and estates are also recommended in his presentation to make Calicut a trade centre in short run. A single window clearance is very much a necessity in government departments to avoid delay in clearances-Prof.Saji pointed out. The revival of Kallai in its past glory as the second largest wood industries in the world, ensuring the availability of quality machinery, the development of Beypore port, were also among the key note issues addressed by the participants.
