IIM-K conducts SOM 2018

IIM Kozhikode will be hosting the XXII Annual International Conference of the Society of Operations Management (SOM 2018) during December 20-22, 2018 at their Kozhikode campus.

The conference attracted more than 200 paper submissions and about 190 of them would be presented in the next 3 days.  The inauguration of the conference would be delivered by the Chief Guest: Prof Vishal Gaur, Johnson School of Business, Cornell University, USA, while Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, the Director of the institute would be delivering the presidential address.

Conference organisers – Prof. Ashutosh Sarkar and Prof. Anand Gurumurthy have lined up interesting workshops and keynote talks during these 3 days. Prominent personalities like, Prof. Gopinath Chattopadhyay, Federation University, Australia; Prof.  Alok V Verma, Old Dominion University, USA; Prof. Arnab Bisi, Carey Business School, John Hopkins University, USA; Prof Saji Gopinath, Director IIITMK Trivandrum; Prof. G Srinivasan, IIT Madras; Prof. Pratap KJ Mohapatra, Ex professor, IIT Kharagpur;  Prof. Haritha Saranga and Prof. Dinesh Kumar from IIM Bangalore and other eminent dignitaries from the industry would be conducting the workshops and delivering keynote talks. The participants from all over India would be converging at the institute and would be sharing their research.

Conference organisers noted that SOM 2018 would have an interesting and a contemporary theme.  They explained that traditionally, the domain of Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSC) addresses the challenges of productivity, quality and cost reduction apart from “uncertainties and variability”. In recent times, the practitioners and researchers are focusing more on developing “green products”, utilising “green processes”, and developing strategies for “reverse supply chain”. Later, it was realized that being “environmental friendly” is not sufficient, rather the OSC should cater to “triple bottom line” of an organisation – by demonstrating economic, environmental and societal development. In the last 5 years, with the phenomenal growth in the field of robotics, information and communication technologies, OSC began to utilise “smart automation”, “near-field communication” and “internet of things (IoT)” leading to another phase of revolution called Industry 4.0. Such developments provide researchers and practitioners newer opportunities as well as newer challenges. It is in this context, the XXII Annual International Conference of Society of Operations Management (SOM 2018) is organised by IIM Kozhikode with the theme: “Operations and Supply Chain Management at Cross Roads: challenges of Big Data, Industry 4.0, Sustainability and Global Uncertainty”.
