Hasrath reporting:IUML condemns Kerala journalist’s arrest in UP
Indian Union of Muslim League condemns the U.P police action against the Journalist and others and urge the authorities to revoke ‘draconian charges’ against them.
A statement from Prof K.M. KADER MOHIDEEN Ex.M.P.National President
Utter Pradesh police have arrested a senior Malayalam-journalist, Siddiq Kappen, who is also happen to be the Delhi chapter secretary of KUWJ (Kerala Union of Working Journalists), when he along with others travelled to Hathras, UP, to do his job as a journalist when a case of rape-murder was reported in the locality. He has been associated with various media institutions in the past and currently writing for Azhimukham.com, a Malayalam web portal. The Police have apprehended the journalist and allegedly denied the rights of an arrestee prescribed by the apex court of the land.
When the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) filed a complaint in Supreme Court in the form of Habeas Corpus writ, UP police hurried to invoke various sections from draconian U.A.P.A to deny bail for the arrested journalist. Restricting media freedom and incarcerating the journalists for doing their duty can only happen in a dictatorship, thus, the action is highly undemocratic and unjustifiable. The incident exposes once again the high handedness of U.P Police in annulling human liberties in the disguise of maintaining law & order.
