‘Modi gov. created foundation for strong and stable economy’

Dr. Surjit Bhalla delivers lecture at IIMK on “Reforms: Foundations of a

Strong and Stable Economy”

Dr. Surjit Bhalla, noted economist, author, columnist and former member of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council delivered a lecture at IIM
Kozhikode on the topic “Reforms: Foundations of a Strong and Stable Economy”,today.
Dr. Surjit Bhalla, in his speech, underscored that the Indian macro economy story, in terms of
growth and inflation, has never been better.
“Our growth would have been even better if the RBI MPC (Monetary Policy Committee of
RBI) had a better understanding of the dynamics of inflation and real interest rate in India, and
the rest of the world.” said Dr. Bhalla.
He commented that “Demonetization has led to significant increase in tax revenue and tax
compliance, and this has helped to release spending for social sector and increase support for
distressed farmers.”
In summary, Dr. Bhalla opined that “The reforms of the past five years have created
the Foundations for a Strong and Stable Economy.”
The post lecture question-answer session was moderated by Prof. Rudra Sensarma, Dean
(Research, Innovation and Internationalization) IIMK, wherein the faculty members and
students interacted with Dr. Bhalla quite extensively.
The event was presided over by Prof. Rudra Sensarma.
During the conclusion of the event, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIM Kozhikode
honoured Dr. Surjit Bhalla with the traditional shawl “Ponnada” and presented a memento.
