Whenever the city requires extra alert, Buddy is here to search the nook and corner to make sure the safety of its residents. If it is the time of militant’s threats, this dear dog belongs to the city police is vigilant at major public spots like railway station, bus stands and so on. Buddy is not just an ordinary sniffer dog . She is always a loving, faithful companion to the force; and most importantly a gold medalist. She is really a VIP (Very Important Pet) in Kozhikode.

When VIPs and VVVIP s visit the city Buddy is the responsible person to make their route safe, accommodation free of tension. Any messages or calls of bomb hoaxes whether at airport or railway station, Buddy sniffs around with his beloved master.

How Buddy became such a great pet, showing extra ordinary talent during the dog training of Kerala Police.

Buddy’s master trainer and Sub Inspector of Dog Squad, Sanil Kumar shares the story of this gold medalist dog.

Her name itself shows the bond between the master and the pet.

“We have one aim. We are together.” this is what I mean by giving her the name, “Buddy”-says Sanal Kumar.

Buddy was brought here from Mala in Thrissur when she was just three months. Now she is two and half  years old. The selection was based on various criteria. Prodigy was taken for consideration.Head; body feature, eye, ear, qualities, alertness and gentleness were bench marks before selecting to the force.

After the selection process, the dog gets training from Thrissur Police Academy. After a rigorous training for a continuous basis, it is a member of the force with all VIP treat.

Buddy became the first prize winner in the All Kerala Police Duty meet held in February 2015.

Many types of evaluations were conducted during the meet. Top police officers tested the performance of the participating dogs.However, the department need not think twice to declare the winner, Buddy because she was the one and only to reach many milestones far ahead of all other competitors.

Obedience, refusal of food, trade work, etc.were among the tests conducted for  selecting the winner.

There is great bond between Buddy and his master, Sanal. When he took Buddy out for some outdoor activities it was amazing to watch her smart, sharp and exciting duties.

Sanal dug three holes in the police office compound in the absence of Buddy.And, he kept a piece of an explosive in one of the holes. All the holes were equally measured and covered with soil. Now, it is the turn of Buddy, who enters to the scene with his master. Her duty belt was worn.

 

Now, she becomes very serious and dedicates herself to her duty without any distraction. Buddy sniffs around the digs and easily found out the hidden explosive.

She wants to invite her master’s attention. She sits near the explosive hole and acts as a victorious child. When her master arrives and congrats her for her smart and intelligent duty, she would rush to her master and shows her gratitude by all.

She wanted to make her master, happy. A mutual bond is  created between the two.

Buddy’s love towards its master is unconditional. For testing this there were created moments. Some of his colleagues tried to attack him as joking. But,

This smart one has got strenuous training for long. Great patience is required on the part of the master during this training. The most challenging task is to make    her aware the smell of explosives. Dogs are intelligent, loving and faithful than any other animals, said this officer who has been training this dog for long.

Dogs, the wolf originated canis familiaris, are one of the best pets in the world. They are capable to keep communicating with human beings in their own way. They are faithful to their masters.

There were many criteria for selecting the best from a number of contestants from all over the state. This dog is the main strength of both the bomb squad and dog squad.

There are moments when both the master and Buddy risk their lives. Sanal recollects one of such moments.

Few years back, the force got a call from Karipur International Airport. There was an unattended bag and a ticking sound inside the bag. Passengers were taken out.

After making sure, nobody was inside the flight, Sanal Kumar entered with his faithful companion Buddy. It was a moment of anxiety. At last Buddy found out the luggage; and inside it was a keyed doll.

etc are the main tasks of Buddy and other sniffer dogs belong to the district police force.

Explosive training is a little tough part of dog training. First of all dogs are to undergo 12 explosive conditioning tests. Sophisticated explosives like TNT, RDX, PEK, PETN, and sheet explosives are used in the training.

Dog are being sniffed to the explosives and they get familiarize the smell of explosives.

The first dog training school in Kerala was established in Thrissur in the year 2008.

Buddy is a Labrador retriever breed and has special talent in searching things keeping loyalty and obedience.

Two other dogs are kept at AR camp.

K.P.Manoj A.S.I is in charge of the squad.Sivadasan P.P, ASI, Aneesh and Santhosh V are the constables attached to the squad.Jayakumar, Jithesh, Baiju and Mithun are other officers.
