In a significant step of revamping the administrative set-up of Calicut University after assuming office on November 21, the new Vice-Chancellor of the varsity Dr. K. Mohammed Basheer on Saturday carried out a major administrative reshuffle, transferring en mass all the staff working in the office of the Vice-Chancellor and many in other departments. The staff, who were attached to the personal wing of the former Vice-Chancellor Dr.M.Abdul Salam, were continuing in the VC’s office even after the completion of his term on August 11.
In all, 25 officers were transferred to other sections and offices of the varsity in a single stretch of the transfers. The transfer of staff normally attracts wide spread protests from the varsity employees’ unions and there used to be agitations in the past over such mass transfers. But, the present transfers evoked no resentment from the unions.
Notable among those transferred is the private secretary of the former Vice-Chancellor Abdul Ahad Pathiyil, who has been transferred to the Examination branch of the university. Employees’ Union President and Exam Distance Education Assistant Registrar S. Padmaja has been shifted to the Academic Branch, while two prominent staff in the former VC’s office. Clara Shirly Fernandas, who handled the degree certificates and Binu. D, have been shunted to other low profile sections.
Mr. George Joseph is the new private secretary to the Vice- Chancellor. Mr. George, who has worked in various prominent departments in the varsity like Elections, Administration, Recruitment and examinations for over 27 years is considered as a suitable choice to become the Private Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor. A law graduate, George Joseph hails from Nilambur.
The transfers of officers at the senior and junior levels assume great significance with change of guards of the varsity administration and the emerging dominance of Muslim League in the affairs of the varsity.
During the Vice Chancellorship of Dr. M. Abdul Salam, who was roped in by the Muslim League as VC, the unions owing allegiance to League and Congress were totally sidelined by him, finally leading to a consolidation of unions and agitations against him.
The new Vice-Chancellor, after holding his first round of discussions with the Heads of the Departments, Directors, Branch Heads, staff and student organizations, has requested to submit proposals to bring about academic excellence, efficiency in administration and any other matter connected with university. The proposals can be implemented/ completed in a stipulated time (time bound in 100 days/ in one year/ long term) on or before 10th December 2015. Heads of the departments should convene Department councils for preparation of the comprehensive proposals.. He has exhorted all the stakeholders of the University to work together to make the University one of the best universities and to provide better services to the students and to the society.
