In the first few hours of the local body elections,Kozhikode corporation area witnessed heavy poll.Both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) camp showed great enthusiasm since the beginning of polling at 7 a.m.
As usual long queues of voters were seen at several polling booths like Elathur, Meenchantha, Eranhippalam, Paroppadi, Women voters assembled in large number in the early morning itself.Most of the constituencies have showed a neck and neck fight between the Congress lead UDF and the CPI(M) lead LDF. The intense electoral battle shows increase in poll percentage in the opening time itself.The BJP camp also took the battle as a testing one to show their much awaited strength.
Party cadres are highly alert to make sure no single vote has been missed because victory may be decided by slight margins in local body polls.
In rural areas, polling progressed slowly because electronic voting machines (EVM) are using for the local body elections in the first time and there are three votes in village panchayaths. EVM use consumes much time than expected,opine polling officers.
One for village,another for block panchayath and one another for district panchayath, controlled by a single unit is the format of voting at village panchayaths.
The polling so far has been peaceful.A large number of police are on duty to maintain law and order.
