Heavy rain and flash flood ;rehab camps opened in Kozhikode

Heavy rain continues to hit the district since yesterday.Various measures have been taken by the district administration to prevent disaster. Kozhikode district collector warned people to be more vigilant to avoid any fatality.Rehabilitation camps have been opened at various locations in the district.

District Collector Dr N Tej Lohit Reddy asked  people to be vigilant as heavy rain and flash floods continues to hit the district .  Tehsildars were instructed to set up camps and when required in case of evacuation of residents from low lying area. The proposal was made at a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority. The Collector asked the officials to inspect the flooded areas in the cities and take steps to avoid further damages due to heavy downpour. It has been directed to check and take action on the traffic obstruction as roads turned water-logged.

Boat facilities have also been set up to evacuate people in case of rising water. Fire and rescue and police departments are ready for rescue operations in the event of a natural disaster in areas including landslip-prone areas. Measures will be taken to prevent people from entering the water bodies as the water level is likely to rise. Panchayaths have been directed in this regard. People should be prepared to move away from landslide prone areas. The Collector also demanded that self-regulation be adopted as people entering the city with vehicles other than essential items create a traffic jam.

Currently, rehabilitation  camps are being set up at four localities in Kozhikode taluk. The camp is being set up at Civil Station UP School, Vengeri UP School and Providence College in Vengeri Village and at Puthiyangadi GMUP School in Puthiyangadi Village. The villages of Pantheerankavu, Nellikode, Kachcheri, Chevayur, Valayanad and Vengeri received the highest rainfall. The camp was set up for the people here who could not go to their family homes.

In Koyilandy taluk, Viyur, Thurayur, Chengottukavu, Payyoli and Chemancherry villages have also been flooded. The tehsildar said preparations were being made for the camps to be started. In Vadakara taluk, near the Paloli bridge in the village below the walk, water has flooded. The tehsildar said preparations were being made for the transfer of people to the camp.

The meeting was attended by district police chiefs AV George and Dr A Srinivas, deputy collectors, tehsildars and departmental officials.
