Fisheries sector is facing aggressive exploitation and actions to be taken to control it, said Fisheries University Vice Chancellor Dr.Madhusoodhana Kurup.He was inaugurating fisher folk meet as part of the 24th Swadeshi Sasthra Congress(national science congress) at Thunjath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Tirur.
Issues and remedies in fisheries sector, convergence of sea- knowledge were the topic discussed in the program.
Dr.Kurup said commercial fisheries wealth has been disappearing due to the existing large amount of exploitation in this sector. Some indigenous varieties have been vanished. There must be researches on how to avoid exploitation in fisheries sector.
The inland fisheries sector too had similar problems, he said.
Malayalam University vice chancellor K.Jayakumar presided over the function.
He said that conventional life style and modern technology in fisheries sector should be linked to rise the living standard of people engaged in fishing.
To collect and maintain indigenous knowledge in this field is on the cards of Malayalam University-Jaya Kumar said.
The three day long science congress discussed various issues and many papers were presented during the event.
