The heart of the education is the relationship between the teacher and the student.It is neither a job nor a profession.It is an art form.It remains a public service-said Prof. Pankaj Chandra,chairman,Board of Management,Ahemadabad University. He was delivering the foundation day lecture at Indian Institute of Management in Kozhikode on Sunday as, part of its 21 foundation day celebrations.
Great teachers inspire students to learn by themselves.
He quoted Rabindranath Tagore to underscore the need of teachers to learn.
“A teacher can never teach unless he (she) learn himself (herself).
A lamp can never light another lamp unless it continues to burn its own flame.
Research is an effective way of learning.It is always about a question or method to answer a question-Prof.Pankaj said.
“Research is not winning prestigious alone.It is a route through which teacher becomes a learner.
It leads to the progress of the self by advancement of knowledge and progress of the society by solving local challenges.”
He said class rooms must be changed to cultivate imagination through interdisciplinary questioning and research.He urged to make universities exciting,imaginative,questioning ,rigorous ,demanding intellectually and emotionally secure and empowering places.
Cultivating imagination is essential to create freedom to think and build a proposition towards the world of possibility.
Those who know how to learn will create impact in society.
Information is available on the net and knowledge become obsolete very quickly with new technological advancements.
Preparations for new jobs and opportunities require an ability to learn.
The new uncertain world demands that our institutions teach us how to learn-Prof.Pankaj said.
He inaugurated the “reKall@20” photo exhibition showcasing the 2 decades of eventful, challenging as well as joyous journey the IIM-K took to academic excellence. He took a tour of the Business Museum also.
He then unveiled the “Wall of Expressions”, which inspires aspiring minds about the key to unlock seamless innovative ideas.
Prof. Priya Nair Rajiv made an introductory speech. Prof. Debabrata Chatterjee, Dean Administration welcomed the gathering. The Foundation Day Address was delivered by Prof. Kulbhushan Balooni, Director In-Charge, IIMK.
A short film was screened chronicling the 20 year journey of IIMK. Faculty and Staff members who have completed 15 years of service were felicitated by Prof. SSS Kumar, Dean Academic.
IIM-Kozhikode was launched by the central government in 1996 .It was the fifth institution set up by the government of India.
It is 6th in ranking among all business schools in India.
There were only 47 students in the first batch which began in 1997.
In 2016 the students strength is 384.
India’s first business museum also opened here in 2013.
Recognition of the London based MBA (AMBA) ,30%growth in girl’s enrollment,interactive distance learning for working executives,center of excellence with the support of the state government,are some of the milestones of the institution.
IIM-Kozhikode is supervising the Indian Institute of Amritsar.
On the anniversary celebrations,the institute honored faculty who have completed twenty years of their service.
“IIM-Kozhikode community has made concerted effort to put the institute in the academic map of India.We worked collectively with our diverse ideas to put up this institute and established it in the current position . We would strive to do better in the coming years and contribute to the nation-building process.”-said Prof.Kulbushan Balooni,Director Incharge,IIM-Kozhikode.
