VP Sathyan was one of the legendary strikers in Indian football. However, considering his dedication to this game, he was one and only of its genre. He played in a unique style and led his team into glorious victories at critical moments, bringing laurels to his soil. One of such golden moments was during the Merdeka Cup in 1986.He broke the 80th minute 3-3 tie and Indian fans banged with rejoice by keeping the tricolour flag more and more high.

Sathyan was the winning formula in the Federation Cup 1989-9- and 90-91.He was the member of the Kerala Police team, then.

He was also the member of the Mohun Bagan, the winners of the Federation cup in 1994.

In 1996,he joined the Indian Bank and led the Indian team to achieve gold medal in the SAF games in 1995.

He was the star who created new history by winning the Santhosh Trophy for Kerala after a gap of  19 years in 1992.

He was named the  AIFF player of the year in 1995.

Till his retirement,he played as many as 80 games including 15 editions of the Santhosh trophy.

When he said good bye to this world in  2006 at an age of 41,it was unimaginable loss to the Indian football.

“He never thought of awards because he had no time to think anything other than football. To him, each and every game was a new experience. He was just like a child when sharing his football wins and loss. Sometimes, he becomes sensitive. He was that much passionate in this game. When India wins, he jumps out with excitement.” recollects Anitha Sathyan,  wife of V.P.Sathyan.

Even if Sathyan was a powerful player, he always longed to be with his family wherever he goes.

“So, we tried to accompany him, most often.” She was interacting with the CNM.

“He was that much a family man spending time with his small daughter those days. Those, memorable moments made a strong bond between father and daughter.”-says Anitha.

V.P’s one and only daughter is an engineering student, now.

Though V.P was less bothered about awards, his admirers and football lovers always felt sad when this great player lost some prestigious national awards between lips and cup.

Anitha is the co-ordinator of V.P.Sathyan Soccer School, founded to build an excellent football team for India by providing long term training from the grass root level.

‘Actually, I was not a big fan of football, in the beginning. I didn’t care much of this world.’

‘Later, I used to watch this game with more attention. Whenever, some media people contact me to comment on major football events, I do so, emphasising that I am not an expert! I think, gradually I take up this game more seriously.’-says Anitha who is working with the district sports council, Kozhikode.

“What we lack today is the grass root level support with world class training. We are trying to provide such facilities within our limit.”

Whenever she speaks about her students at this soccer school, she has a motherly concern regarding their food, their training schedules, and physique…..and also thinks about their academic studies they undergo from various schools.

The school provides football training for fifty, selected students. The selection has been made in a scientific way after evaluating the talent of the applicants.

Apart from football training, the school follows a module for the over all development of the students.

For attain this, motivation classes are regular item ,here.

Both boys and girls under the age of ten  are admitted to this institution.

“In the beginning, I was very much concerned and anxious about the outcome of the project. However, Sathyan’s friends, fans and well-wishers encouraged to take up this course.

Meanwhile, things turned very supportive. To be frank, an unknown spark empowered us and we had not faced any troubles, except some unavoidable fund crunch.”

“At the school, we provide nutritious foods to children apart from providing a professional training facility.

This is a huge financial responsibility. The ray of hope is the financial aid we receive from some great minds like N.V.Balakrishna Marar of TBS publishers,Kozhikode.Indian Bank also extended their support.Above all,the district sports council holds up this school in a unique way.

If we get some private sponsorship, we can fulfill our dreams of world class training to our coming generation.

We are also looking for some permanent practise grounds for our kids to perform during training time and tournaments. Now, we are thankful to  Malabar Christian College Authorities for providing their ground.

We are trying to give a foundation lessons just like a nursery and mould them in accordance with their interests and talents.”

V.P.Soccer school kids are the winners in most of the inter school foot ball competitions.
