Walayar girl’s mother says election an opportunity to ask the CM questions on the broken promise

  • Abhish K Bose,Kottayam

The mother of the two minor girls at Walayar who were sexually assaulted and murdered in 2017 who is contesting at Dharmadom in Kannur against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan says that she considers the election as an opportunity to ask the CM regarding the broken promises made by him to ensure justice to her.

“Four years passed since the death of my two children and I have approached the Chief Minister one and a half years ago. My demand is that justice should be given to my children and those police officers who sabotaged the case should be terminated from the service. When I said this the Chief Minister took hold of my hand and promised that those guilty would be punished.  But later on I came to know that the police officers DySP MJ Sojan and sub inspector Chacko who investigated the cases were given higher recognitions by the government”, she said.

“Sub Inspector Chacko who investigated the case first was promoted as Circle Inspector and DySP Sojan’s name was sent for recommendation for conferring the Indian Police Service (IPS) for him”, she alleges.  The accused in the case were acquitted by the POCSO trial court, however the verdict was later set aside by the High Court following an appeal by the state government and arrest of culprits re-trial was ordered. Following massive protests the state government handed over the case to (CBI).

It was on January 13, 2017, the elder of the two sisters, aged 13, was found hanging in a rafter inside the family’s one-room home near Walayar in Palakkad district. Two months later, on March 4, the younger sister aged nine was also found hanging on the same rafter, leading to unprecedented protests.

Post-mortem examinations of the two children confirmed they were subjected to sexual assault before their deaths. Following protests, five persons were arrested by the police.

“The judicial inquiry conducted later categorically states that SI Chacko committed lapses. Without naming Sojan the commission said that the person who is in the position of the DySP is culpable.  She asked whether DySP Sojan and Chacko were given the recognition without the knowledge of the Chief Minister?

The mother asks why the two officers were given higher recognition by the government after assuring her that stern actions will be taken against them. Is it because we belong to the Scheduled Caste and we don’t have the strength. The government have deceived me by promising to take action and not yet took any actions. “ By taking part in the elections I got an opportunity to ask the Chief Minister face to face these questions”, the mother said.  Protesting against the government inaction she recently tonsured her head as a mark of protest.

She alleged that the government decision to hand over the case for (CBI) investigation is a farce as the case of the elder girl was handed over, whereas the younger girl was not handed over. I lost two of my eyes. Why they are reluctant to hand over the case of the younger girl to (CBI) investigation?

“The post mortum report of the younger girl clearly says that there is a possibility of murder. Why haven’t they investigated the possibility of murder?  When the police came after the death of my younger girl I asked the police to bring the police sniffer dog, however they dismissed it by saying there is no need for that. If they did that then the real culprits could have been nabbed them itself.  Why they are not conceding the lapse that have occurred from their part”, she asked.  The nomination will be filed on Thursday.

She said while she was conducting a strike at her residence from February 25th to 31st Minister AK Balan responded to the media that he is not aware why I am conducting the strike.  “The words are from the mouth of the Minister who is responsible for protecting the interests of the Scheduled Caste.  “We can gauge from those words how the government is interested in our issues.   The mother said that the interest behind the government to protect the accused is due to their high level connections with the government.  “We have pointed out at two of the accused by saying that they are the culprits. The post mortem certificate is also mentioning about this.  She also alleged that there was a lapse from the part of the prosecution which conducted the trial of the case.

The mother said she was not aware of the political connections of the prosecutors of the case  Jalaja Madhavan and Latha Jayaraj who belong to the (LDF) and the UDF.  “None of the people may have suffered like I have suffered and I wish no one shall faced the fate I have experienced.  The government had an opportunity to take a right decision till before the election was declared.  I have even caught at the feet of them. She said that two of the accused were her relatives and two of them are daring to do anything for the CPM.

The mother alleged that the government handed over the case of the death of her elder daughter to the (CBI) after I joined the strike with the samara samithi (protest council) that too after the government finds that they have no other way. Then why did they not hand over the case of the younger girl to the (CBI). She alleged that she is facing threat to her life from the accused and also the police officers. She said that she go back to the strike venue once she is not victorious in the frays otherwise she would be there in the assembly.
