Who will save Calicut beach?

Chicken wastes, animal remain from   slaughterhouses, plastic bottles, and carry bags, food wastes from restaurants…and filthy water drainage…what more?

Calicut beach has become a dumping ground for solid wastes and sewage.

This is a new picture of Calicut beach, once very popular for pristine shores and romantic sunsets.

Street dogs dominate beach walk areas.

How the Calicut beach is managed in such a careless manner?

Calicut is a not pristine beach, any more.

Where is the District Tourism Promotion Council and district administration in charge of the beach maintenance?

The offshore and on-shore waste dumping pose threat to visitors’ as well as sea-dwellers’ health because many diseases, such as fungus generated, appear especially during the time of summer shower and early monsoon.

The report of dolphin deaths and huge fish species washing ashore in Malabar Coast also raises concern.

The beach areas, opposite to the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation and areas covering, beach open stage old sea bridge areas are highly polluted.

Calicut beach beautification works were carried out long back. A music café was opened nearby Lion’s  Children’s park.

It was a leisure centre for music fans who hang out to the beach.

Meanwhile, there is unconfirmed report about bio-medical waste is being dumped in the sea.

Earlier, some NGOs and volunteers took part in sea-shore cleanliness drive.

Once, the program ends, everything turns just as usual. Lack of proper cleanliness maintenance method is the main set back of this beach.

K.P.Abdulla ,one visitor who have been a fan of this beach since his childhood, says”

“It is painful to see our beach in such a situation. No government interference required,here,if our people are vigilant and maintain healthy and cultured behaviour to protect our sea-shore.

Veni Madhav,a student in a city college says, “We had joined in the cleanliness drive one year back.But,the present condition is really bad.”

“Whenever some celebrations, meetings, and special occasion arrive, people start to discuss the situation and no sincere effort is taken, here.”-points out Abdulla.

A joint-drive by the district administration, tourism department, NGOS, and student community.

Various political parties opt this beach to organize grand programs. As the result of massive rallies, huge number of people assembles here from different parts of the district.  It is another reason for plastic waste disposal. Once, the program is over, no volunteers make this venue and surroundings neat.
